Phenomenal Women

Where African-American Women Come Together

Phenomenal Women is a series of groups that meet twice each month to discuss issues which impact the lives of Black women. Over the past 4 years, over 400 African-American women from all walks of life, came together to support, educate, laugh with, be friends with, listen to and understand each other.

We listened to the music of Indie Arie's "Healing" and learned what we, as Black women, need to heal from. We discussed our relationships, including the rifts and love that exist between Black men and women in our community. We learned how to take better care of our bodies, how to protect ourselves from HIV and STDs, how to perform breast self-exams. We watched the powerful documentary, "No! Black Women and Rape!" and found the strength to talk about our own experiences and those of our sisters/mothers/daughters/friends.

We celebrated one year of meeting new friends, of finding beauty and joy in our hair, our skin, our weight, our voices, our history, our culture, our music, our poetry, ourselves. One sister said, "Every time I have come, I've left feeling better about life and better about myself."

Groups meet in Aurora except from June to September when we meet at Red Shield Community Center in Park Hill. Certified child care and a nutritious dinner is always provided for you and your children. All services are free. Bring a friend.
